Why Buy Local?

There are so many reasons to support local businesses and local markets. Local produce tastes better and is better for the environment. Also support local independent artists! They are working hard to inspire you. I found this information on another site, but it is definitely worth sharing on my blog.

Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local

  1. Buy Local -- Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.(Click here to see summaries of a variety of economic impact studies; these include case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base.)

  1. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses.
  2. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust
  3. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution.
  4. Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents.
  5. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.
  6. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future.
  7. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.
  8. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.
  9. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

Fall's Message

I am working to have a specific message for each season of the year. For this Fall, My message is "THINK GREEN". As the world (or some of it) is trying to think eco-friendly, you can do your part in so many different ways. Just little things from buying or making your own grocery/shopping bags, to reusing gift wrap, newspapers, plastic, or anything you can find or create a new use for or find a new home for. If you start to really think about the 3 R's and how to implement them into your life, there are so many easy ideas that will come to mind. There is so much useful information on the web on how to help out. After a while of thinking in the aspect recycling and reusing, you will find yourself unconsciously doing it, and unconsciously inspiring others to do it as well. I do have to mention that one great way to help our world is to buy from independent artists that create items from recycled fabrics. Moon Time Wear Designs does just that, while I also work with other independent artists to incorporate ways to add organic cotton items to my company, I am also working with others to help them establish a place in the world by sharing my love of their own work and trying to find ways to help them. We are all one.. It's time we start acting like it. Love it, Create it, Share it!

Here are just 5 good reasons to recycle:
1. Recycling conserves our natural resources
2. Recycling saves energy
3. Recycling saves clean air and clean water
4. Recycling saves landfill space
5. Recycling can save money and create jobs

I recently met some great people at a festival. find them at yougottabekidding.org look for me on the flicker photostream

Fun @ Festivals

Whether it is a farmers market, a seasonal festival or a fundraiser, having artists come together to share and express their love of art and originality is quite contagious. You can always tell the vendors who do it for the love of creating and expressing and those who are just in it for the money. The ones who love to create, want to tell you stories about their inspiration and passion to create. They want to have you come over to just acknowledge their time and originality of their work. They want to hear you say "Wow! Your Gifted!" "Your work is amazing!" "You never see designs like this!" I mean of course what person doesn't want praise, but for an artist who puts their heart and soul in every design, having acknowledgment for that means more than the $. So at the next festival you attend, stop by every "handmade" stand and really appreciate the artist. Really take the time to look at the work, understand that this person creates their items with their own hands and heart. See them as the artist that they are, ask them how they began creating. Listen with your heart to their stories and let them inspire you... They are there to do just that. INSPIRATION... It's Priceless! By doing this, I promise you will leave their booth feeling so amazing. From the artist, you will also be valued more than you know, whether you buy anything from them or not. Spread the good word about that person. Take a moment to enjoy the creative energy of them... LOVE one another

How To Meet Inspiring People

The Buggy Days Festival was a blast. I had my honey with me to help with setting up the "EZ Up" canopy that isn't so easy to do alone. We enjoyed some tasty foods and the company of old friends we haven't seen in many years. One of best part about festivals is celebrating all the crafters and praising their handmade creativity. As an Artist myself, just having people come to my booth to relish in my original designs makes it all worth while. I was honored to be vending beside one amazing lady. Her name is Peggy and she crochets beautiful art. She is 79 years old and her hometown is Barnesville GA. She learned to crochet when she was 17 years old and still does it for the love of it. Her energy was simply amazing. I was in complete awe of the beauty of her work and the cheap prices she had her items listed. I asked her "How are you able to sell your items so cheap, considering the time you put into creating?" Her response was "As long as I have have enough money to buy more materials, that is all I need." I knew immediately that this woman was something special. I bought many beautiful original items from her. I also asked her if she would be interested in making some items for Moon Time Wear Designs and she agreed. I am hoping to have her create some crocheted appliques for my designs. I am so blessed to have spent a weekend with such a lovely lady. Thank you Ms. Peggy for sharing your loving inspiring energy with me.
